The boy that wouldn’t smile!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Yesterday I did my first twin photoshoot.  I was not sure what to expect at all from these two.  They are about 10 days shy of their 2nd birthday, and mom wanted some candid pics to give to friends and family.

The girl was lively and smiley, however, her brother, not so much!  He was having fun, but was not warming up to me or the camera at all.

We had an awesome time!  We went to a park nearby and just let them play and explore while I followed them around.  We tried to get them to sit together, which lasted all of 30 seconds!  All in all, it was a sucessful shoot!  Here are a few faves so far:

Aren’t all children photogenic?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Well of course they are, but whether or not a child is photogenic is not the problem.  It’s getting them to actually look at the camera when you ask them too that is the hardest part of photographing children!

Some children, like my friend’s son, have no problem posing for me:

On the other hand, no matter what you do or how hard you try, a child will not look at the camera.  Especially your own child, as I displayed in my first post!

So what do you do when you’ve been hired to do a child photo session and you can’t get the child to participate?  At one particular shoot, Jellybeans worked wonders!

I haven’t had a huge opportunity to photograph children yet, besides the children of my friends.  I have two photoshoots coming up towards the end of this month.  One is for two year old twins, and the other is a 3 year old, her 17 month old brother and their dog.  I would like to know what your tips and tricks are for a successful photoshoot!

Inspiration

Earlier this year I was laid off from my job.  After much discussion with my husband, we decided that it was time for me to take time off to be a full time mom to my daughter.  I decided that it was a perfect time to pursue my love of photography.  I wasn’t sure at that point what direction I was going to take with it, but knew I’d eventually discover the direction when I was ready to see it.

I started by taking my SLR on walks with my daughter.  During one of our first walks, we came across a sweet Indian woman who seemed to be lost.  She was speaking to us in her language, and I think she was asking me where her house was.  She kept pointing towards a certain area.  I told her that I was sorry, but I didn’t understand her.  She patted me on the shoulder, almost as if she was saying “it’s ok”.  She then leaned over to Sarah, said something to her and kissed her hand.  Without worrying about my exposure settings, I quickly snapped the picture.

I wondered for a few days if she made it home ok, but I never heard of any missing person reports or other bad news.  I believe God guided her home safely that day.

It’s moments like these that inspire me to take pictures.  It’s a life like this that inspires the moments to happen.

My favourite subject!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

My favourite subject, of course, is my sweet daughter.  She was born September 11, 2005 after 28 hours of labour, but who’s counting!  Never in my life did I imagine I would have such a perfect piece of beauty to photograph.  Sometimes taking her picture is a challenge, depending on the mood she is in:

But other times, she’s the perfect model, posing so naturally as if the camera isn’t even on her!

Each day I thank God for bringing her into our lives.  She is going to be a wonderful big sister in December.  She is already so excited about having a baby brother!  I just hope that she realizes he’s not a toy!

Undoubtedly, she has been subjected to many practice photoshoots.  It’s no wonder she cringes when I pull out the camera these days!  I respect her wishes though and won’t photograph her if she says no.  Some days she says “take my picture mommy!” and how can I resist?

I would love for her to have the photography bug that I have.  She does like to try to take pictures, but hasn’t really shown a genuine interest yet.  That could change one day, but for now, she can just remain my favourite subject!
