Just because…

Friday, May 14th, 2010

I’m writing today just because I feel like it. It’s a beautiful day today and I want to remember every moment of it!

I’ve been thinking a lot about my photography business the last few weeks and am realizing how thankful I am to have such wonderful clients.  This weekend I’ll be photographing a sweet two-year old girl who I photographed last year when she turned one.  In fact, I know that a few of my clients from last year will do repeat business with me this year.  Clients who return year after year make me feel very honoured that they have trusted me with their beautiful memories.

Recently I’ve been talking with an up and coming photographer who is new to the business.  It’s hard to start a business, especially when there are so many out there who are trying to be photographers also.  The market seems very saturated right now and everyone seems to be trying to undercut the next person to get the clients.

I think that’s where as a business person you have to decide what your business philosophy is going to be and stick to it.  Now I’m not saying don’t be flexible here and there, but if you have a vision of yourself 3-5 years from now, do what you need to do to get yourself there.  Don’t worry what Sally down the street is doing with her business, or even your good friend who also started up a business.  You have to choose what is going to be right for you.  If you have the talent and the great attitude to go along with it, you will be successful with your business model.

That brings me to my next thought:  Networking.  Instead of looking at all these other photographers as competitors, network with them instead.  It doesn’t hurt to share knowledge.  At the end of the day, there are more than enough clients to go around.  One of my good friends, Sharon, is a photographer and we are always sharing ideas with each other.  If we want to use one another’s idea, we ask first because that’s the courteous thing to do.  We bounce ideas off each other and vent when we need to.  I love having her in my life to talk shop and eat sushi with!  I admire her work so much, and am so thankful to be able to call her a friend.

Well, that was a bit more than a Just Because, wasn’t it?  :)   Sometimes I never know what my brain is going to spill out when I start typing.  And, since I am a photographer, of course we need to have a picture.  Thank you for arriving, spring.  You were missed during the winter!

Bid on your session! {Brampton Family Photographer}

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

The Heart Lake United Church’s 4th annual spring carnival is this Saturday, May 8, 2010.  Their wonderful carnival includes free games and snacks for the kids, a BBQ Chicken Dinner and silent auction.  The church is located at 85 Sandalwood Parkway East, just east of Highway 10 in Brampton.

This year I am pleased to announce that I am donating a photo session for the silent auction, valued at $150 (Newborn, Belly to Baby and Beautifully Growing packages not included).  Why not come out to the carnival and place a bid on this item, or one of the many other items up for auction!  All proceeds go to the church to fund various missions and projects within the church and the community.

I also have family dinner tickets for sale if anyone is interested.  A family ticket dinner for four people is just $30 and includes the chicken, 4 sides and beverages.  YUM!  If you’d like a ticket, please email me at jennifer@naturallybeautifulphotography.com

I don’t know what else can be said about something so beautiful. God created this wonderful world so that we can see sunsets like these. Take a moment with me, won’t you? Breathe deeply and enjoy the beauty!

It runs in the family!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Have I ever told you about how I got started in photography?  Well, I can truly tell you that it runs in the family.  My grandmother loved photography.  She always had a camera in hand whenever we went somewhere.  There are lots of pictures of my dad and his sisters from when they were kids as well as me and my cousins growing up.

My dad enjoys photography also.  He taught me how to use the Pentax K1000, a fully manual camera for those of you who don’t know!  There was no little computer inside to do any thinking for you!  You had to set your ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed correctly to get the right exposure and you had to get it right in the camera the first time!  (Same applies to dSLRs of course…)

I’ve been taking pictures all my life.  My first camera was some cheap little 110 film camera when I was 10 or 11.  It took the most awful pictures but I loved it!  Over the years I had many cameras and always had one with me when we went on trips with friends and family.  I have albums full of photos – my practice years!

Dad taught me the technical aspects when I was 18.  I got my first film SLR a few years later and went digital in 2008.  Now, my children have been bitten by the bug.  My youngest (13 months) is already trying to get my camera, as you can see above!  My daughter has a cute toy camera that takes the most awful pictures!  I plan to get her something a bit nicer when she’s a bit older and won’t break it so easily!

ETA:  Since posting this, my aunt informed me that my granddad also was an avid photographer.  He passed away when I was 8 so I don’t remember a lot about him.  He had a darkroom in the basement and was very interested in the physics of photography.  Cool.

So that’s my little story!  What’s your story?  I’d love to hear it!  Comment or email me.  I LOVE comments!

Happy New Year!

I want to thank the Academy….wait, wrong speech!  :)

This past year has truly been one of the best years of my life.  I feel like I’ve been on a high all year long.  My business grew and surpassed my expectations but none of that would’ve been possible with out my fabulous family to support me!  My husband has been my rock and my children my inspiration.  None of this would’ve been possible without them!

To all my clients:  I feel so very blessed to be able to capture the wonderful memories that we created during our photo sessions!

To my new clients, and this year there was many:  You are all wonderful!  It was a pleasure meeting you all and becoming a part of your life, even if only for just a day.  I look forward to seeing you through my lens again next year!

To my returning clients:  Thank you for your continued business and referrals!  I look forward to photographing your families for years to come!

To my friends and family:  Thank you for your love and support!  You are a bunch of amazing people!  Please don’t ever change!

With love, always,

Jennifer

It’s official!

The holiday season is officially upon us!  Tim Horton’s has released their winter coffee cups!  I look forward to seeing these cups every year.  They are always different and remind me of having fun in the snow as a child, back when I enjoyed playing in the cold weather!  Now…not so much!

In other news….

Earlier this week I suffered a great loss.  My external hard drive quit on me and along with it went my entire year’s work.  What makes me even more sad is that pictures of my children were on the hard drive also.  Images of my son’s first year of life – gone.

My husband, who is an IT professional, is working on the drive and we hope to recover what I’ve lost. I’ve since bought a new external drive and will be changing the way I handle my files.

So, why am I posting about this?  I know a lot of photographers read my blog and I want it to be a message to everyone to please make sure you are diligently backing up and double backing up your data.  Don’t suffer the heartache I’ve gone through this week!  It’s not the way to learn a valuable lesson!

The Journey

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I’m finally starting to wind down after a busy autumn season.  I was much busier than I anticipated and am very thankful for all my new clients.  The last 6 weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind for me, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.  I’ve met some wonderful families and adorable children.  I feel like I’ve changed the way my friends and family view photography.  They see the value in what I do and how my style is so different than going to a portrait studio.

I’m very proud of how much I’ve grown as a photographer this year.  I’ve learned so much from fellow photographers and from myself also.  I’ve taken a big step on my journey as a photographer.  I know the road is long and is a tough one, but now, more than ever, I know that I can knock down any barriers that get in my way!

Thank you to everyone who has supported me this year.  It means so much!  :)

Fall Fun!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

While I am sad to see that summer has left us, I look forward to the beauty of autumn!  The kids enjoy playing in the leaves so much, and the beautiful colours make even the cold air worth withstanding to get some nice pictures!

Now, if only it would stop raining every time I schedule an outdoor photo session!  At least I got a few of my kids yesterday!

Sweet Cheeks!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Let me start off by saying this was my daughter’s idea, and a good one at that! When my son was 6 months old, I took a picture of his cute little tooshie and I casually mentioned to my daughter that I would like to do one of the two of them like this. At the time she didn’t want to do it, so I forgot about it. A few days ago she brought it up. I’ll never say no to a cute photo op!

Today I give thanks for two of the cutest bums in my house!
